Hilda Marie Mial passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 10, 2021. She was 85 years old. Hilda was the cherished mother of Dr. Curtis Odom and his wife Nelia of Massachusetts; and LTC (Ret.) Betty Haynes and her husband Hillard of Florida. She was the adored grandmother of Alyssa Odom, and Christopher Hookfin; and beloved by her great-grandchildren Devon, and Dominic Hookfin.

Hilda was raised in Kentwood, Louisiana and moved to New York City in the 1960s. She later moved to Rhode Island where she married, and would retire from a 30-year career at Rhode Island Hospital. In retirement, Hilda was active in Providence city politics for many years serving on the Democratic Ward Committee. Hilda’s true joy came from spending time laughing with family, taking bus trips all over New England with friends, and tirelessly volunteering her time at the Washington Park Community Center in her Providence neighborhood for over 40 years.

Hilda will be sorely missed by her loving friends many of whom she had known for decades. The flood of calls, greeting cards, and support she received during her months of declining health meant the world to her. Her family expresses deep gratitude for the kindness and care she received from the nurses and staff at Hope Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence where she spent her final days in resting in serenity.

At Hilda’s request, there will be neither be a viewing nor a funeral mass. A private celebration of remembrance will be held in the future when her immediate family and close friends can gather together safely for an extraordinary event to honor Hilda’s memory. Swan Point Cemetery in Providence has been entrusted with both her cremation services and columbarium inurnment.
